Sup fools, it's GLENJAMN aka the "Cultural Historian" reminiscing about another tite time when I kicked it at The Well before there even was The Well LA. Since I got a rad reception w/ my 1st #TBT post and my 2nd #TBT post I'm gonna go in again. So, lemme go and share a rad moment with y'all via photos and/or videos (b/c God gave me two hands for two cameras)...
I think all this happened during the Halloween weekend of October 30-31st, 2010...
BANG BANG BANG. Remember I told you that all my #TBT posts were gonna start w/ some epic vid? Well here it is.
The vid above was basically the end of a crazy weekend shooting Hard Haunted Mansion (Before it got called HARD: Day of the Dead)... when the dude, Boys Noize, that just DESTROYED the Mayan last nite was doing an impromptu B2B w/ this young French Techno DJ w/ hairy arms named Brodinski that I had just met earlier during the weekend... I mean, two Techno heavy hitters combined their forces and show off why they are 2 of the best DJs out there on the planet...and I was rolling video. And this was about 6 years ago... These 2 are still legit killing it now (I mean I just saw Alex burn the Mayan to the ground last night w/ his new LIVE set)... so, take a seat, roll a joint, and let's take a trip back in time...
So, yeah, the video above is one of those classic moments that randomly happened at the OG Well LA spot near the Shrine Auditorium because it happened to be just blocks away from the HARD Halloween party that weekend... You know what they say, "LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION." I distinctly remember Jefferson being like "yo, we need to throw an afterparty after the festival nearby" and guess what, the party happened and it was one of the best ones I had ever been to.
So, before we go back to that rad moment at the OG Well spot, I gotta reiterate once again, that this was also the same weekend that I first met Brodinski while he was in town to play HARD: Haunted Mansion. I mean, this weekend was pretty significant b/c I basically met someone that would become one of my best friends in the world to this day after the homie, Guillaume Berg (AKA the OG French Plug), randomly brought this fool over to my old crib in Echo Park to kick it before his gig at HARD.
Like, look at those 2 above, they are unrecognizable from their current versions. It's sorta crazy to go back and think about how I have gone through so many epic moments in my life with these 2 French dudes above for the last 6 years, and TBH, the night at the Well was one of the epic moments that helped set it off. We were creatures of random fun, and somehow my Korean-American party vibe had aligned with the trajectory of the French fools' waves in some cutty warehousey building near the fest aka The OG WELL LA and we realized we were not that different from each other. But before we get to the after party... we need to check out some memories from the "pre-party" aka the giant HARD Halloween festival that was going on hours before...
This was when I lurked my ass as close as I could to the stage inside the Shrine Expo Hall to see what the fuss was about w/ Brodinski. Like I said, I had barely known him at the time (like this was a year before Bromance Records was even formed), so I did my traditional ninja-filming and was very fuckin impressed by the chops on this dude for being such a youngster. I mean, this fool was mixing up a storm and dropping serious Techno bangers that I hadn't even heard of yet to the unsuspecting kids in the packed room. I mean, he fuckin killed it, and I have proof.
At the time, Louis was the up-and-comer in the scene that had amazing skills and wasn't an asshole to hang around with. So, as a young gun on the scene, it was tight to see so many older pros treat him like a peer and not some booger-picking adolescent. This fool had and still has skills beyond his age and it was really rad to see so many "legends" sticking around for Brodinski's set to support him and give him props. S/O to SO-ME, Fake Blood, Diplo, and Generik for sticking around and being good friends. Special Easter-Egg footage at 1:32 in the vid for those who dare ;)
So... yeah, moving on from how I met Louis that weekend... I'm now gonna talk bout how my other homie for life, Boys Noize, was also at the fest that weekend and was also killing it HARD (pun intended). He is the 2nd part of that epic B2B at the beginning of this post... so I'm gonna reminsce a bit ;) I've probably now known Alex, Boys Noize for about 6.5 years by now... and I watched him kill it at The Mayan last week doing his new LIVE SHOW... so, it's cool to write this now about a friend that I just saw last week haha.
I basically shot about 20 minutes of Boys Noize set at HARD b/c I didn't want the kids that missed out to totally miss out and blow their brains out in a fit of FOMOverload... But, as you can see from my angle, I shot it from the crowd and tried to get as close to Alex as I could, but this was before I was gifted the rad UNIVERSAL pass that got me on stage (that would happen a couple years later when HARD FEST would hire me to finally be apart of their squad). But yeah, the vibes were strong and I was super-fan mode and just tried to capture as many moments from that day from my soon-to-be German friend for life. Just like how I did w/ Louis, I would constantly run into Alex at festivals and stuff and become closer and closer til I ended up crashing on his couch in Berlin years later. This was a seed that grew into a tree fosho.
Once the rad festival was over on the 2nd day, I caught wind of Jefferson's plan to lure Boys Noize and Brodinski to the afterparty at The OG Well LA to just "chill" but I knew that he would need some help. I was definitely fixin' for a party after shooting 2 days of the festival back-to-back on my dinky lil camera...SO... I jedi-mindtricked Alex and Louis into following me to The OG Well spot and jus "kick it." I knew that if I waited long enough, Alex and Louis' DJ senses would tingle and they would have to jump on and play b/c it was a part of their DNA.
So... after "kicking it" for a bit, Alex just went in w/ his fat book of CDs (this may have been right before the rise of USB sticks for CDJs) and got the vibe to a proper BPM. He brought in some dope house to techno to some electronic vibes and I was down. Dude, I hadn't watched this video in YEARSSSS and TBH, I found that if you go to around the 8:00 mark, you will start seeing flashes of a young Sonny Moore aka SKRILLY to the side of the DJ booth and a very yung AC SLATER before he figured out the formula to BASSing the NIGHT. I can honestly also say that my camerawork was shitty and I bugged a lotta people w/ that LP-Micro light on my camera... and I wished I had my Sennheiser mic by then... but naw... that's just me being a wishful revisionist ;) Anyhow, we all know that this Alex set led to the rad B2B below:
Then these 2 played the set they wanted to play (at the top of the post) and then the rest, as we say, is HISTORY!
When I looked back to find some photos of the party, I realized I didn't take a grip (probably b/c I was tired from shooting the fest)... so here are a couple vibey flicks from that fun Halloween weekend that ended up being way more significant to me than I initially thought.
So... Moral of the story... Friends that party together, stay friends forever.
So... yeah, another #TBT and now my brain is confused and I forgot what day it is today. I'm gonna take a day nap b/c my procrastinating ass just finished this post. So... there.
