Just like I did w/ my previous #TBT post, I'm gonna start jumping on THE WELL LA blog from time to time to drop some knowledge + photos + vids. Enjoy these brain farts from a fun day/night/whatever. Thanks for letting me hijack the blog again buds!
So, I went to both days of HARD SUMMER 2016 on July 30-31st, 2016...
So... before I go innnnnnnn on what went down at this year's edition of HARD SUMMER FEST... I wanted to first mention that I have been shooting HARD Events ever since they started doin the damn thing in 2008! I've had a really great relationship with my big bro, Destructo, and the rest of the HARD FEST FAM, so I just wanted to shoot some good vibes to these homies that continually invite me to just go out to their events and just wander like a nomad and do my thang. I love the homies that keep it real, and they have kept it real for a minute now ;) OK, now on with the show...
Well... I shot a GRIP of stuff, so I'm gonna start off w/ a self-promotional banner for u to find any of the videos I didn't write up b/c I uploaded like 58 fuckin videos, no joke. Sorry it took so long to do this post, but dude, I have been fucking BUSSSSY trying to recover from these epic days in Fontana. So.. CLICK THIS BIG GLENJAMN THING TO GO THE YOUTUBE TREASURE TROVE...
OK OK... NOWWWWW let's get started... basically it was like 100 degrees at the fest, which was held at the GIGANTIC Auto Club Speedway in hot-ass Fontana. I drove like 2 1/2 hrs to get to the fest on the first day b/c of some fucked up traffic on the I-10 East, but I finally made it. Like I said, I shot a lot of shit, maybe too much shit... so I'm just gonna go thru and give you guys some highlights of each day b/c well, I'm not a blogging machine ;) LOL
I know that most of my career has been in covering dance music-related stuff... but, whenever I see the OG's do anything anywhere in the vicinity, they ALWAYS get the top spot. I am a born and raised So Cal native and I was down listening to the music from the homies from this side of the country. Even though it's hard to record the audio for big ass bass and live vocals, I still tried, and whatever, it was tite :)
2) THE DIRTY BIRDS ALWAYS KEEP IT VIBEY
All I can say is, I love the dudes that were DJing above... Justin Martin is one of the nicest and vibiest members of the #SHIPFAM... and Claude Von Stroke is that huggably rad dude that also kills it when he DJs. So, anyways, you add in a Sonny and some more homies jus havin fun, and you get probably the vibiest stage of the whole festival.
Mija used her time in front of thousands of kids to just beam out a message of niceness when they needed to hear it most. Gary then started his set with the new track from those rad French dudes w/ messy hair and leather jackets. I really really liked these 5 minutes of the day :)
4) TRAVIS SCOTT AKA THE LIT-MEISTER GENERAL
So... I've been following Trav Scott for a minute now and I am super proud of what he has accomplished. The dude that brought the RODEO to FONTANA and LIT that shit on [flame emoji] fire [flame emoji]. Seriously, him and Mike Dean have really done some special shit in the last 2 yrs...
5) BAAUER KEPT IT REAL
Ever since this dude got the cosign by Dr. Dre on that Compton album, he has been on fire. I saw him briefly last year at the Low End Theory Fest, but he has improved significantly and is killing it. No wonder he was included in the 2016 XXL Freshmen Class. And like I said, the girls love him and that definitely means he is doing something right.
DUDE. Look how massive Josh and Curt's new stage setup is. It's like 50% the hatch from Lost, 25%, the Assault from American Gladiators, and 25% the prison from The Walking Dead. Basically, I loved it and I saw the practicality of having walkways and ladders coming to and from the DJ booth, b/c I know those dudes love running around onstage ;)
These are the homies that got stuck in the Green Tent/Stage right outside the actual racetrack where most of the acts were goin on... so I luckily ran into these dudes at the very beginning of the fest and caught them do their thing. Emphasis on luckily b/c it was very rare for me to go back to the Green Tent...
9) GOD BLESS GOLF CARTS AT THE FESTIVAL
DUDE. Like I said, the fest was GIGANTIC, and I always thought I won the lottery when I got to hitch a ride on the race track to the next stage.
So... yeah, that was Day 1. I went home right after the fest and then started uploading the vids that are all up in this post. I went to sleep around 6am. What an idiot... b/c I had to do the damn thing again. Luckily the second day didn't have the nightmare traffic from yesterday and there was a nice breeze wafting Fontana on Sunday.
Managed to catch the tail end of Lil Uzi Vert's set when he went into his track, WDYW, then he actually did WHATEVER HE WANTED by running off in his Pharrell x Adidas - Human Race NMDs off the stage and into the crowd and whatever. PARKOUR begins at 5:35 in the vid.
2) KILL THE NOISE SAYS "FUCK TRUMP" & LET'S PARTY:
I love Jake. He's always been one of the nicest dudes to be around and he makes bone rattling music. It was loud. It was craze. He told the kids to go on and FUCK TRUMP like 20 times during the set. So yeah, I fuck with him. The last video has a nice confetti cannon moment w/ the homie Madsonik.
3) BRODINSKI IS STILL IN MY TOP 5 OF ALL-TIME TOP DJs
So, I have a long history with Louis Brodinski... he was my roommate for a bit in Echo Park back in like 2011, and he has been a consistent force as a DJ whenever he plays. When I say that this dude is one of my Top 5 All-Time DJs, it's pretty big b/c I've seen a LOT OF MUTHAFUCKAS in my day that DJ, and I just gotta say that I fuck with Louis' style since day one. And his new shit that he's working on in ATL... man y'all ain't ready.
4) BOYS NOIZE WAS SHORT. SWEET. EPIC.
Alex is another one of those dudes that are in my close circle of homies that I actually like hanging out with and listening to their music. This dude is family and he sincerely was sad that his set got cut short b/c his flight got delayed like 4 hrs from NYC. But, as the consummate professional German that he is, he went and killed it in front of a shit ton of kids. It was still tite, and jus wait til he brings his new LIVE SHOW in October to LA...
Don't forget that TY is #SHIPFAM. So, he's always had a soft spot for the kids that go to HARD and loves to give a good show. I love it when the kids sing along to Ty and Joe Moses and there is a brilliant summer sunset in the background. I dunno but I'm a sucker for these types of moments where everyone is just on the same wave.
7) REUNION VIBES w/ KAYTRANADA
I remember listening to 99.9% when I was out in Palm Springs smoking a joint in the heat while staying cool in the pool. That's when I truly listen to music... when the world is receptive to me listening to new music. So with that said, it was dope to run into the homie from Bromance #10 progressing his vision while I did a walk-by onstage fist bump. Thanks for watching my vids still Kaytra... you a real one.
It's always cool when you get to go to a festival these days and something happens with the set-times or whatevers... and you get that special mix of fans of two different genres just enjoying the DJ in front of them. Green Velvet is a legend and he closed his set to the surprise 2nd day set from Ghastly... which is more of a younger gun in this scene. Anyhow, both DJs killed it and I hope some kids learned something new in the Pink Tent that day.
9) MAJOR LAZER MEANS... LAST SET OF THE FEST!
OK... the reason why I stuck Major Lazer on the highlights list was b/c once I finished shooting Major Lazer, my 2 days of shooting were officially over. I love these buds and I have been a fan of them since Day 1... but after 2 days of traversing a giant auto speedway to not miss an act, trust me, if you feel me in saying I was glad to be done ;)
Oh yeah, I spent so much time talking about vid clips and moments that I forgot to mention that I also shot a grip of photos. I'm so tired from reliving these memories, so I'm gonna just make a little slideshow module thingie below so you could check them out yourselves.
So... yeah, at the end of it all, it was a fun time with a bunch of friends doing their things. I was sweaty but it was worth it. I was smelly but it was worth it. I'm finally glad I finally got all these thoughts off my chest from this rad festival.
ALSO... before I sign off on this post, I just wanted to have a moment of remembrance for the three kids that tragically lost their lives during a time meant for fun and good music. I didn't wanna just whitewash over it. Shit like this sucks, so we have a moment to pay our respects.
R.I.P. to Derek Lee, Alyssa Dominguez, and Roxanne Ngo.
Please please please always remember to be safe at all these festivals b/c they are designed to make you have the best time ever... not the most dangerous time ever. Always drink enough to stay hydrated and to make sure you know what you are taking w/o going overboard. That's it. I'm tired now.
See y'all next time.
